North Star Equestrian Center

North Star Equestrian Center is a unique program where connecting with horses is prioritized. Riding, training, and handling are skills developed across all disciplines: western, jumping, and dressage. Developing trust, controlling emotions, and understanding different perspectives opens the connection we can have with ourselves, our horses and each other.  

At NSEC, the experience with the horse is a partnership; Horses are not beasts of burden here. The lessons are training-focussed even from the beginning level. The youngest rider can begin to learn the emotions, perceptions, and motivations from the horse’s point of view. Doing so enriches problem-solving, empathy, and perception and students begin to observe the world around them differently. Participants are developed into thinking and responding as a horse trainer, which is a step further than horse rider. Horse trainers think about the needs of the horse, observe the horse keenly, and develop solutions.

Horses are living, feeling beings and need to be understood and respected as such. Often “safe” horses get described as “bomb-proof.” The idea of a “bomb-proof” horse is kind of a myth. Horses are reactive and thinking creatures. Understanding riding from this idea removes the “safety” from the horse’s responsibility and places it in observing reality. Accidents happen when a horse or rider has not been set up properly. Teaching riders how to read a situation and respond accordingly minimizes accidents. 

We want to find the people in communities who have a love and passion for horses and wish to connect with them. We have riding lessons at many different levels-individual to affordable classes. We also have events, clinics, and a work-study program.
